Debate: do you charge by the hour or by the job? I found a stat that says 60% of carpenters lose money on hourly rates because they work too slow.

I read that on a trade blog last night and it got me thinking. I always do fixed prices for cabinets but hourly for trim work. Which side do you fall on and why?

@mary_wells nailed it with hybrid pricing. Hourly is safer for trim work cause those old houses always throw curveballs. Fixed price on cabinets is just common sense though.

Trim jobs I stick with hourly because there's always some weird angle or old work that takes forever. Fixed price for cabinets makes sense since you know exactly what you're building. Have you tried hybrid pricing?
