Found a cracked jack stud on a renovation last Tuesday in Springfield
We were framing out a new door opening in this old house built in 1925. After we tore out the old frame I noticed a vertical crack running through the jack stud right where the header sat. Turns out the whole thing was barely holding on from a bad knot in the wood. Now I check every single stud before I start nailing anything together. Anyone else run into hidden damage like that on older homes?

Man it's wild how one bad knot can teach you to double-check everything in life, not just studs.

13 years of roofing taught me that one loose nail can sink a whole crew's day. I still check every single shingle twice before I step off a ladder, and I treat my car keys the same way now. Got locked out of my truck at a gas station once cause I didn't double-check my pocket. A buddy of mine almost lost his finger because he didn't double-check his circular saw blade was tight. It's not just knots or studs, man. It's the small, forgettable stuff that really bites you.
