I finally saw the difference between pocket screws and dowels on a real job

Built two identical nightstands last month. Used pocket screws on the first one. Took 4 hours. Used dowels on the second one. Took 8 hours with all the measuring and clamping. The dowel joint came out tighter with zero gaps. Pocket screw one had a slight wobble after a week. Is the extra time worth it for dowels or is that just a hobbyist thing?

Did you catch that Fine Woodworking article about dowel versus pocket screw strength tests? They did a controlled test and the dowel joints held like 30% more weight before failing. But here's the thing, they also tested a third option where they used pocket screws with glue, and those were almost as strong as the dowels. Your wobble issue might be from skipping glue on the pocket screws. I know a lot of production guys use pocket screws for face frames with glue and they hold up fine for years.

You're right, it's funny how often we skip the basics thinking shortcuts are good enough, but then wonder why stuff falls apart. Feels like the same thing with people skipping rustproofing on a car frame or primer on drywall, just asking for trouble down the road.
