I thought biscuit joiners were a gimmick until a cabinet job in Tulsa last month changed my whole setup
For close to 6 years I looked at biscuit joiners as a tool for guys who couldn't cut a real joint. I built face frames with pocket screws and glue, and I figured that was good enough for the kitchens and built-ins I was doing around Springfield. Last month a contractor buddy asked me to help hang 14 upper cabinets in a rental flip over in Tulsa, and he showed up with a Porter Cable biscuit joiner he picked up used for $80. I rolled my eyes, but he ran a biscuit in every joint and lined up those boxes so fast I just stood there with my drill in my hand. The alignment alone saved us probably 3 hours over two days, and every cabinet front sat flush with no shimming. I used his joiner on the last 5 boxes myself, and by the end of the weekend I was already looking at prices online. I still think pocket screws have their place, but I was flat wrong about biscuits being a crutch. Any of you use them for more than just face frames, like on shop cabinets or built-ins?
