Level check on old stair treads, never again on a Friday
Had a client last week in Columbus ask me to just nail down some squeaky treads, but the whole stringer was twisted from a bad remodel 20 years back. I took 3 hours with a laser and a 4 foot level to shim every step, then realized my mistake was assuming the top landing was true, it was off by half an inch. Ever had a job where the reference point itself was the thing throwing everything off?

Check the reference point first every time now. Get a long level and a straight edge on anything you're calling your baseline, especially if the house is older or been flipped. Half an inch on a landing means your whole layout is garbage, no amount of shimming on the treads fixes the math. Also, marking all the riser heights before you start shimming saves you from chasing your tail when the second floor's off too. Good luck with that stringer, I've been there and it's a whole weekend job once you realize it.
