My neighbor's old school framing method made me question my whole process

He said, 'If you can't build it with a hand saw and a chisel, you don't really know it.' We were talking about a tricky gable end on his shed in Toledo. Do you think modern power tools make us worse at the fundamentals?

My grandpa said the same thing about sharpening lawnmower blades.

Grab a file and clamp that blade down good, that's the old school way. My grandpa made me do it by hand a few times so I'd learn the angle, and honestly it stuck with me. Now I use a bench grinder because it's faster, but I'd never know how to set it up right without those first few rough tries. There's just some stuff you gotta feel in your hands before you let the machine take over.

He's right about the basics, but power tools just let you work faster once you know what you're doing.
