Old builder in Ohio showed me his square trick
I was working on a deck in Columbus last summer and an old builder named Carl walked over. He saw me fighting with my speed square and just laughed, then pulled out a beat up combination square from the 70s. He showed me how to use the body of the square as a depth stop for repetitive cuts, something I never thought of in 8 years of framing. Has anyone else picked up a weird old tool trick from a older carpenter?

benb21 I hear you man, sometimes the hype doesn't match the trick. But it's cool you gave it a shot anyway, not everything clicks for everyone.

man that saved my life" lol calm down dude. it's just a square not a medical procedure. i had a guy show me a pivot trick with a speed square for cutting rafters and honestly it was whatever, still use my regular method. older carpenters act like they invented water but half the time they're just showing you how to do something with busted tools from 1974.
