Old timer at the lumber yard told me to nail every 6 inches on decking - I called him crazy til I saw my first winter freeze

Guy must have been 70 years old, been building decks since the 70s. I figured I knew better and spaced my nails out like 12-14 inches apart on a big deck job last summer in Portland. Looked fine for a while. Then January hit and the boards started bowing and popping up like crazy. Had to go back and renail the whole thing. Lesson learned, listen to the old guys.

That is a tough lesson to learn, especially on a big job like that. Portland winters can be brutal on wood, that freeze-thaw cycle really works everything loose. You hate to see anyone have that kind of trouble, but I bet that renailing is going to hold for years. Old timers have a way of seeing what will go wrong before it ever happens. Good on you for owning up to it and getting it fixed right.
