Pro tip: Check your lumber yard's offcut pile before buying full boards

I was at Builders Supply in Portland last Tuesday grabbing some 2x4s for a shed frame and noticed they had a whole bin of oak and maple offcuts for like 50 cents a pound. Saved me about $80 on a small table project compared to buying full boards from the rack. Has anyone else found hidden deals like that at their local yard?

Always worth asking what they’d normally toss. Little stuff adds up fast.

My buddy Dave found a similar deal at a yard in Seattle last month. He was building a walnut dining table and the offcut pile had these beautiful 6 foot long pieces from a commercial job. The yard guy told him they usually just throw that stuff away if nobody buys it. Dave grabbed enough for the whole tabletop for like 30 bucks. He had to do some extra glue ups since the pieces were narrower but the grain looked amazing. He still brags about that find every time someone compliments his table.
