Stop trusting that digital angle finder on trim until you calibrate it

Ngl I caught three guys on separate jobs this month all cutting crown and base miters with those digital bevel boxes straight out of the packaging. Last week one of them was off by damn near 4 degrees on a 45 and it took us an hour to figure out why the joint kept gaping. I checked my own unit against a known framing square and it read 45.7 when it should have been dead zero. These things drift from the factory and during shipping, so a two minute calibration check saves you a whole drywall patch session later. That was on a kitchen remodel in Boulder where the homeowner watched me re-cut the same piece of stock three times before I pulled out a protractor and caught it. Has anyone else seen those cheap digital boxes drift like that, or am I just getting bad luck with the batteries or the magnetic base getting dirty?
