Why does nobody talk about checking studs before drilling for handrails?

I spent 2 hours patching drywall last Tuesday after trusting a stud finder that lied to me on a staircase in Portland. Grabbed a cheap magnet and found the real studs in 5 minutes, total game changer for how I mark rail brackets now. Anyone else still using the fancy sensors or did I miss the memo on the magnet trick?

Stud finders work fine if you know how to use them right.
