Wrote off Grip Rite screws as big box junk for 10 years, a framer in Tulsa changed my mind
I always told guys to buy the name brand collated screws because I figured the cheaper ones would strip or snap. Then I worked a 3 week framing job in Tulsa last fall and the lead guy handed me a box of Grip Rite 3 inch screws. I grumbled but ran them in my Hitachi, and I stripped maybe 2 out of 400. That job had 90 degree heat and green lumber, so if they were gonna fail, that was the week. Has anyone else had them hold up long term, or did I just get a good batch?
Ran Grip Rite for years before switching, and the thing nobody mentions is that they're made by the same company as a couple of the "name brand" boxes, just a different label and coating. The real variable is the collation, not the screw. Plastic strip vs paper tape changes how the driver feeds them, and a worn bit will strip anything, cheap or not.
So your two out of 400 probably says more about your Hitachi and your bit than the screws. Green lumber and 90 degrees is a fair test though, I'll give you that much.
