Found out the average carpet job wastes 12% of the roll, and I think most of us just eat that cost
I was reading through a flooring supplier newsletter out of Dalton last week and it said the average installer wastes about 12% of every roll on cuts and mistakes. That number stuck with me, so I went back and looked at my own numbers from the last 6 jobs and I was closer to 15% on two of them. The weird part is I always just priced that waste into the job without thinking about it, like it was a law of nature. If I could get down to 8% on a 40 yard roll, that is real money back in my pocket on every single job. I started measuring twice and marking seams before I cut anything, and I cut one room with almost no leftover scrap for the first time in months. Has anyone here actually tracked their own waste per job, or am I the only one who has been guessing at it?
Damn, nobody ever talks about the roll width either. You can save every inch on length and still bleed money if you're ordering 12 foot goods for rooms that only need 10 foot cuts, since that extra 2 feet is dead space on every drop. Matching your roll size to the actual room dimensions might do more for you than cleaner cuts.
