Had a talk with a 30 year guy at supply house that made me think

I was picking up some tack strip at the local supply house near Cleveland yesterday. This older installer, been at it since the 80s maybe, saw me grabbing the standard stuff off the shelf. He asked me if I ever use the wider tack strip for commercial jobs. I said no, just whatever is cheapest. He told me he switched to 3/4 inch tack strip with more pins about 10 years ago after too many callbacks for carpet pulling up at doorways. It hit me different because he wasnt trying to sell me anything. He just said your work is only as good as what holds it down. Ive been doing carpet 12 years now and never really thought about the tack strip quality mattering that much. Has anyone else gone back and changed their basic materials after a long time in the game?

12 years in and you never thought about tack strip quality? feels like one of those things where you don't fix what isn't broken.

If you've never had a problem with the cheap stuff, then yeah, no reason to mess with it. But once you hit a bad batch that splinters or the barbs break off, you'll definitely start paying attention.
