The secret to stretching carpet in a tight hallway finally clicked

I spent three hours last Thursday wrestling a 12-foot runner in a narrow hallway and kept getting ripples near the baseboards. Then I tried using a knee kicker at a 45-degree angle instead of straight on, and the carpet laid flat in half the time. Has anyone else found a weird angle trick that worked better than the standard method?

Three hours on a hallway carpet feels like overkill" is what my buddy Mark said after he tried the same thing... he spent four hours on his own hallway runner cause he refused to look up any tips. He finally gave up and just used double-sided tape along the edges to hold it down, which worked way better than his kicking technique. Now he swears by tape for any tight space and won't touch a knee kicker again.
