Can we talk about the $9 sandwich that made me start packing lunch again?
I was at the deli near my office in Denver last Tuesday and grabbed what I thought was a normal turkey sub, just to get through a rough workday. The cashier rang it up and it came to $9.47, which is more than I used to spend on a whole loaf of bread and a pack of meat combined. I stood there doing the math in my head and realized I could make the same thing at home for about $1.80 if I bought stuff on sale. That night I went to the store and grabbed a rotisserie chicken for $5.99, a loaf of bread for $1.29, and a bag of spinach for $2.50. I've been bringing lunch every day since, and I'm saving close to $40 a week. Has anyone else had a single purchase just flip a switch in their head like that?
That $9.47 is brutal for a turkey sub. I had the same thing happen when a burrito at the place by my apartment hit $11, so now I cook a big pot of rice and beans on Sunday and bring it all week for maybe $6 total. The rotisserie chicken move is smart too since you can stretch that thing into like 3 days of lunches.
