I finally figured out why my $1.20 bean pot tasted like nothing for 3 years
Back in my first apartment near Dayton in 2019, I lived on a bean and rice pot that cost me $1.20 a batch and tasted like wet cardboard, and I ate it twice a day for eight months anyway. My mom came to visit and watched me dump in a can of tomatoes and a full cup of water without ever tasting anything first. She grabbed the pot off the stove, dumped a third of the water out, and squeezed in half a lime from the fridge door. That one lime, about 40 cents at the time, was the difference between food I hated and food I looked forward to. Here is what got me: I had the salt shaker sitting right there the whole time and never touched it because I figured the canned tomatoes already had enough. Now I taste before I add liquid, salt after, and lime at the end, which is three moves I skipped for years out of pure laziness. Does anyone else have a cheap staple meal that was one small thing away from being good and you just never noticed?
