Just found a used rice cooker at a yard sale for $3
Picked up a beat up rice cooker at a yard sale in Allentown yesterday for $3. Threw in some lentils and onions with the rice and it made 4 solid meals for under $5 total. Anyone else got a weird tool that saves them money on food?

Oh come on, $3 for a rice cooker and $5 for four meals? That's like $1.25 per meal which is fine but let's not act like you're some kind of financial genius for boiling rice and lentils. Rice cookers are cool and all but one power surge or scratch on the nonstick coating and you're back to using a pot like the rest of us.

Yeah, but I gotta disagree a little. Rice cookers are actually pretty tough - you can get a basic one without nonstick coating for like $15 and it'll outlive your microwave. And the "$3 for a rice cooker" thing is usually someone grabbing a clearance model or thrift store find, which is legit if you're broke. The real win isn't the math on lentils, it's the convenience - set it and forget it while you do other stuff. Plus, cooking from scratch like that teaches you something about making food stretch, even if it's not exactly gourmet.
