My grandma's $3 bean pot vs my $40 electric pressure cooker, which one actually wins
Two years ago I cooked dried beans the old way, soak overnight and simmer 2 to 3 hours in a big pot on the stove, and a pound of dried pinto beans from the Aldi on State Street cost me like $1.29 plus maybe 40 cents of electricity. Now I use an Instant Pot and the same beans are done in 35 minutes flat with zero soaking, but the thing cost $40 and I still have to drag it out of the cabinet. My grandma swears the long simmer tastes better and honestly she might be right, the broth comes out richer. Is the time saved actually worth the counter space, or am I just being lazy here?
How long does the rich broth really last though? If you make a big batch on Sunday and eat beans all week, the Instant Pot time saved is 35 minutes one time, not every meal. Your grandma's pot wins on taste but the electric one wins on Tuesday night when you forgot to soak anything.
