Shoutout to the guy who told me to freeze my own bulk beans
I was at a cash and carry last month grabbing rice and saw this older dude with a cart full of dried beans. He asked if I'd ever priced out how much you save buying them dry vs canned, and I honestly hadn't. So I did the math when I got home. A 25 pound bag of pinto beans was like $12 at my local WinCo in Portland. That works out to about 11 cents per cooked serving if you soak them overnight. Compare that to the 89 cent can at the store. I froze them in ziplock bags after cooking a huge batch. Has anyone else done a cost breakdown on something like this and been shocked by the markup?

Right? That cash and carry guy changed my life too (and my grocery budget). I felt so silly for paying the canned tax for years, but hey, at least I'm making up for it now with my freezer full of bean bags.

Feel you on that canned tax guilt. I did the same thing with chickpeas last year and it was honestly embarrassing how long I'd been sleeping on dry beans. Freezer full of baggies is the best kind of clutter tho.
