I grabbed a fancy lentil soup kit at the farmers market last weekend and it was bland, then I made a basic pot with a 1 pound bag from the dollar store, same spices and time, and it had way more flavor. The kit's pre-measured spice packet just tasted like salt, while my own cumin and garlic powder did the real work.
