TIL grocery store discount racks are goldmines if you hit them at the right time

I stopped by the Piggly Wiggly near my place in Memphis around 8 PM last Tuesday and found a bunch of marked-down veggies and bakery bread for like 50 cents each. Has anyone else figured out the best hour to snag those clearance tags?

Hit up my local Kroger around 7:30 PM on Wednesdays and the meat section is practically giving stuff away. The bakery stuff gets marked down earlier in the afternoon here, maybe around 4 PM. Produce discounts usually happen right before they close for the day, so check the store's closing time and show up an hour before. You gotta be consistent with the timing though, cause if you miss their markdown schedule by even 30 minutes it's all picked over. What day does your Piggly Wiggly usually restock their shelves?

Wait, have you ever noticed how Kroger’s markdowns vary wildly by location? @jenniferwells, that 7:30 PM Wednesday thing is spot on for my local store too, but I read online that some folks get lucky with fish discounts on Fridays instead. The inconsistency drives me nuts honestly, because last week I showed up at 7:15 and the meat bin was already wiped out except for some sad looking pork chops. I’ve heard the best bet is to ask a random stocker what time the markdowns hit, since they’ll usually give you the real scoop. My Piggly Wiggly restocks on Thursday mornings, so I aim for Wednesday evenings around 5 to catch the clearance before the new stuff comes.
