Grocery store cashier told me my $9.47 dinner haul was 'sad' and now I can't stop thinking about it
Last Tuesday at the Safeway on 4th, I was checking out with a bag of dried lentils, two sweet potatoes, a can of crushed tomatoes, and a bunch of kale. Total came to $9.47. The cashier looked at my stuff, then looked at me, and said, 'That's it? That's kind of sad, don't you think?' I just laughed it off and bagged my stuff, but honestly it bugged me for days. I made a big pot of lentil sweet potato curry that lasted me four dinners and it was actually really good. Like, better than the $14 burrito bowl I used to grab on the way home. I'm not mad at her exactly, she probably just meant it as small talk. But it stuck with me how quick people are to assume cheap food means bad food or a bad life. Has anyone else had someone comment on their groceries like that? What did you say back?
