Unpopular opinion: my aunt's $0.50 soup trick beat every budget app I tried
My aunt Rosa told me something back in March that I brushed off at first. She said stop buying those $4 boxes of broth and just save your veggie scraps in a bag in the freezer. I was spending like $18 a month on broth alone, which sounds small but adds up fast when you're already stretched. So I tried it for 2 months and honestly she was right. I keep onion skins, carrot peels, celery tops, and mushroom stems in a gallon bag, then dump the whole thing in a pot with water and simmer it for an hour on Sunday. One bag makes about 8 cups of stock and I haven't bought broth since early April. It's not fancy but the soup tastes way better than the boxed stuff and I'm saving close to $200 a year. Has anyone else done this, and what scraps do you toss in versus leave out?
