Found out my favorite chef mentor lied about knife sharpening

I read this old interview with a guy I used to work under. He said he never used a whetstone, just a steel and a honing rod. Turns out he sent his knives out every week to a shop downtown.

Hold up, did he ever actually show anyone how he sharpened or just talk about it? That kind of lie makes me wonder what else he might have faked in the kitchen. Tbh, claiming you only use a steel when you're sending them out professionally is a bold move for a mentor. Was he just trying to sound old school and tough, or did he think nobody would ever check?
