Hot take: I used to think a quick visual check was fine for a level 1 inspection, but seeing a cracked flue tile in a chimney I cleared last month in Boulder changed my mind.
I found the crack because I finally bought a decent inspection camera, a Vividia VA-400, and now I won't do an inspection without one because you just can't see that stuff from the top down, right?

How much did that camera run you? I've been on the fence about getting one for exactly that reason. You're totally right, a visual from the top misses so much. That crack could have been a real problem later. Sounds like that purchase already paid for itself.

Totally, that visual check is basically useless for finding the real issues. I found a whole nest of bees way down in a flue last summer that I never would have seen from above. Those cameras are a total game changer.
