Question about a weird creosote deposit I found in a flue in Portland last Thursday

It was this hard, glassy black layer about a quarter inch thick that my standard brush just skated over, and I had to go back with a carbide scraper, so what's the best way you've found to deal with that specific kind of buildup?

What temp was the fire running at?

Honestly, the "what temp" question is tricky without a probe. I usually go by look and feel. If you're getting a good bed of coals and a thin blue smoke, you're probably sitting in that sweet spot around 225 to 250 for low and slow. That's where I aim for ribs or brisket.
