Read a sign at a hardware store that said 'soot is just unburned potential'

I was picking up some brushes at the True Value on 7th and saw this little hand-written sign taped to the shelf near the sweep kits. It said something like 'soot is just unburned potential' and it really got me thinking about how we treat buildup. Been in this trade for about 8 years and I always just saw creosote as the enemy, not a clue about what the fire was trying to do. Made me wonder if I've been rushing my cleaning jobs instead of reading the stove's story a bit more. Anyone else ever get weird little insights from random stuff like that?
