Stopped at a lodge in North Carolina and saw a chimney with a huge top damper

I was up in the Smokies last month and noticed this log cabin had a massive top damper that looked almost brand new, but the flue tile had cracks all the way down. Has anyone else run into homeowners who spend big on accessories but skip the basic liner repairs?

Saw a guy in Tennessee put a $2000 copper cap on a crumbling brick chimney once.

Man, I used to think spending that kind of cash on a cap was a waste too. But now I see it like this - a crumbling chimney without a good cap is just gonna get worse faster. Sometimes spending a little more now saves you a whole lot of trouble later.
