Switched from a wire brush to a poly brush on the flue last month, and I am never going back
I picked up a homeowner job in Salem about three weeks ago, old brick chimney with a clay liner that had maybe 15 years of creosote baked on it. I started with my usual wire brush on a rod, the one I have used since I started sweeping, and it was fighting me the whole way. The bristles kept snagging on a rough patch near the smoke shelf and it took almost 40 minutes just to get one section clean. The next day my mentor let me borrow his poly brush, the stiffer white kind, and the same section came clean in about 12 minutes with way less mess. The poly bristles flex around the rough spots instead of digging in and jamming, so you keep a steady pull instead of jerking the rod. My arms were not shot by lunch either, which honestly matters when you have three more jobs lined up. The only thing I noticed is the poly brush does not scrub hard glazed creosote as well, so I still keep the wire one in the truck for stage three buildup. Has anyone else made the switch and found a brand that holds up longer than a few months? Mine is already looking worn after six chimneys.
