That 200 year old creosote buildup stat still bugs me

I read a history thing last month that said a single 1780s London chimney could pack in 50 pounds of creosote per season, which makes my worst residential clog look like a joke, anyone else ever dig out something that old and wonder how the heck they managed without power tools?
