TIL that a squirrel nest can turn a simple sweep into a 3 hour job

I showed up to a ranch house outside Boise last Wednesday thinking it would be a quick 45 minute clean. When I shined my light up the flue, I saw about two feet of dry grass, twigs, and shredded insulation packed tight above the damper. I ended up pulling out four full buckets of nesting material before I could even get my brush up there. The homeowner said they had heard scratching for about a week but figured it was just the wind. Has anyone found a good way to keep squirrels from coming back after you clear them out?
