Finally realized my compost bin was way too dry after a friend's pile looked totally different

I've been composting for like 3 years in Portland and always wondered why my stuff took forever to break down. My neighbor let me peek in her bin last month and hers was steaming and full of worms. Mine was just dry leaves and sad coffee grounds. She said to aim for the consistency of a wrung out sponge. Added some water and turned it more and now it's actually cooking. Anyone else make this mistake for way too long?

Took me two years in Seattle before I figured out the same thing.

Ain't it crazy how long it takes to finally get that? I was three years in Portland before I had the same lightbulb moment.
