Hot take: the $65 I spent on a used bike last spring is the best money I ever put toward cutting my car trips
I found a rusty 10 speed on Marketplace in May for $65 and figured worst case I was out a tank of gas. Turns out I now ride it to the post office, the grocery, and my sister's place instead of firing up the car for every little 2 mile trip. My fuel bill dropped about $40 a month, which paid the bike off in under two months. The chain fell off twice the first week until I watched a 4 minute video and fixed the derailleur myself. Anyone else doing short trips on a beater bike, and how do you deal with rain without spending a fortune on gear?
