I called BS on those home energy audits for years, then I finally did one in my 1952 house near Dayton
I always figured those home energy audit things were just a way for some company to sell me new windows. My neighbor Jerry kept bugging me about it after he did his place in Kettering, and I finally caved last October because my gas bill hit $310 and I was sick of it. The guy spent two hours with a thermal camera and a blower door, and he found a 4 inch gap behind my basement rim joist plus almost no insulation in the attic. Sealing that rim joist and air sealing the attic hatch cost me $180 in materials and my own Saturday. My next two gas bills came in at $190 and $175. So now I'm wondering what else I ignored for 20 years because I assumed it was a scam, has anyone had a similar surprise with something they wrote off?
