My block got 6 recycling bins last month and 2 of them are now full of trash bags
Last month our city dropped off 6 new green bins for our block in Dayton, and I watched two guys on my street fill theirs with regular trash bags within the first week. I called the city and they said contaminated bins just get sent to the landfill, so all those recycling ads we paid for are doing nothing. I'm not trying to shame my neighbors, but nobody explained the rules to them in person. Has anyone here run a simple door to door talk that actually got people to sort their stuff right?
Is it really the end of the world though? I get being annoyed, but two bins out of six isn't some huge crisis. Cities have been fighting this battle for decades and people have always been lazy about sorting. There's a reason the recycling industry mostly just wants clean cardboard and cans anyway, the rest has always been a mess. A door to door talk might work on a few folks, but most people who toss trash in there already know they're not supposed to and just don't care.
