My uncle told me to skip the electric car and get a used hybrid
He said the grid can't handle everyone going electric yet and the mining for batteries is a problem. So I bought a 2017 Prius instead of the new EV I wanted. After a year, my power bill is up $30 a month from charging my tools and I still buy gas. I'm starting to think he was wrong and I should have just gone electric. Has anyone else switched from a hybrid to an EV and seen real savings?

Wait, but what about the battery replacement cost on that Prius? (I heard those can be a huge bill down the road.) Your uncle might have saved you from a different kind of headache.

Honestly, your uncle's points are pretty shaky. The grid thing gets better every year with more solar and wind, and modern EVs use way less mined stuff than before. That Prius battery worry from @veramartin is real, mine cost me $4k to swap. My buddy's 5 year old EV battery is still fine and his "fuel" costs are basically zero. You're still paying for gas and higher electric bills for tools, so where's the real win?
