The tide line at Cannon Beach moved 30 feet up the sand since I was a kid
I took my daughter to Cannon Beach in Oregon last month, the same stretch where my parents took me around 1995. I remembered the dry sand starting way further out, so I paced it off and the old high water mark I remembered sits roughly 30 feet inland from where the water reaches now. There was a guy there with a clipboard logging debris lines for a coastal study, and he said this beach has lost about 4 feet of dry sand a year since the 80s. If you have a beach or river spot you've known for decades, go pace it out and write down what you see, because our memories alone won't show up in any planning meeting. Has anyone else measured a shoreline they grew up on and gotten a number like this?
