Update: My electric bill was nuts so I tried a weird trick with my water heater
Our power bill hit $280 last month, which is crazy for a family of five in a regular house. I knew the old water heater was probably a big part of it, but we can't afford a new heat pump model right now. I read about turning the temp down to 120 degrees and wrapping it in an old blanket insulation kit from the hardware store, cost about $30. Did it three weeks ago and just got the new bill, it's down to $235. Not a magic fix, but that's real money back in our pocket every month. Has anyone else tried simple stuff like this that actually made a dent?

Ever think about how much power those old cable boxes suck up? I unplugged mine and just use a streaming stick now, saved a few bucks. Makes you wonder what else is quietly costing you.

You're talking about saving "a few bucks" but let's be real, that's hardly a flex. That old cable box, even when it's sucking power, is also probably giving you way better picture quality and reliability than a streaming stick that buffers every time someone breathes on the Wi-Fi. So you saved maybe 5 dollars a month, but you're also dealing with app crashes and compressed audio? Seems like a fair trade to me. Plus, most people don't even realize that unplugging stuff like that can mess with your DVR recordings or channel guide updates if you ever want cable again. You're basically saving pocket change and trading it for a worse experience. Is it really worth it?
