Went to a hardware store in Austin and saw a new kind of air conditioner
It was a heat pump water heater, right next to the regular gas ones. The sales guy said it uses way less power, maybe 75% less. He explained it pulls heat from the air to warm the water. I had no idea these were on shelves here. Has anyone actually installed one of these things?

Yeah, that's the wild part, seeing them just sitting there next to the old gas models. I got one put in last year and my summer electric bill was way lower, but you gotta think about where it goes. It blows out cold, dry air, so sticking it in a hot garage or stuffy basement is perfect, but you wouldn't want that cold draft in your living space. The install was the tricky bit, needing a drain line and more space around it than a regular tank.

My cousin put one of these in his garage last year and now his wife jokes that it's the "man cave refrigerator" because it's like 50 degrees in there year round. He brags about it every time we have a BBQ, like anyone cares about his AC unit's features lol. But honestly, the drain line thing is no joke - he had to run it all the way across the ceiling to a floor drain and it looked like a plumbing spaghetti project for weeks. Now he's got this massive drip pan underneath it because he's paranoid about leaks, which kind of defeats the whole "sleek and modern" look they show in the ads.

Right, because what every garage needs is its own personal winter. The install sounds like a whole project just to avoid a draft in the house. Guess you really have to want those savings.
