A machinist with 40 years in the shop told me I was overthinking my feeds and speeds
He said just listen to the machine, if it sounds happy it is happy. Been running smoother ever since anyone else been told to trust their ears over the book?

Man, that's some of the best advice I've ever heard. There's really no substitute for just feeling the cut and letting the machine tell you what it wants, you know?

Oh boy, I gotta push back on that a little. The machine isn't "telling you what it wants" because it doesn't want anything. It's just a chunk of metal with a spinny thing. What you're actually feeling is the material fighting back against the blade. The saw or the planer isn't giving you advice, it's just showing you where your setup is wrong or your technique is sloppy. "Listening to the machine" sounds nice but it's a shortcut that usually leads to kickback or a burnt workpiece. You're really just observing physics doing its thing. Get the tool set up square, feed it steady, and keep your hands clear. That's the whole conversation right there.
