Old timer at the shop showed me a tool I'd never seen before

There's this guy named Frank who's been running CNC machines since the 80s. He retired like three times but keeps coming back to help out. Last Tuesday he walked over while I was struggling with a weird finish on some aluminum parts. He handed me this beat up little micrometer that looked like it had been through a war. He said "the machine tells you lies, but the metal never does." We spent 20 minutes checking backlash on my machine and found the Y-axis was off by nearly five thou. Has anyone else had an old machinist drop some weird wisdom on you that actually saved your setup?

Why trust his old tool over your machine's digital readout?

Frank's crusty old micrometer is probably more accurate than your digital readout because it hasn't been recalibrated since 1995.
