Ran the same 3/16 end mill for 14 hours before checking runout, and the finish on my parts finally told on me
I was cutting a batch of aluminum brackets last Tuesday on the Haas at our plant in Wichita and the finish kept getting worse no matter what I did with speeds and feeds. I messed with the coolant, I re-trammed the vise, I even blamed the material for a while. Then a guy I work with asked when I last checked runout on the tool holder and I just stared at him because the answer was never. Put a dial indicator on it and saw .0035 of runout, way past anything you'd want for a finish pass. Pulled the holder apart and there was a chip mashed into the taper that had been sitting there who knows how long. Cleaned it, swapped in a fresh holder, and the very next part came off looking like a mirror. Twelve years running machines and nobody ever told me to check that, I just grabbed a holder and went. Now I keep a dial indicator right in my box and check every holder before a finish op. How often do you all actually check runout, or is it one of those things you know you should do but skip?
