Serious question, tried bumping my spindle speed 15% on 6061 and the finish got worse, not better
I run a Haas VF2 at a shop in Dayton and I've been fighting chatter on a 3/8 inch end mill for about two weeks. Everyone kept telling me to spin it faster, so I went from 3000 rpm up to 3450 on a finishing pass and the chatter got worse, not better. Turned out my feed per tooth was way too light, like 0.0005, so the tool was basically rubbing instead of cutting. I dropped the rpm back to 2800, pushed the feed to 0.002 per tooth, and the finish came out mirror smooth on the first try. Blew my mind that slowing down fixed what I thought was a speed problem. Anyone else get burned by chasing rpm before checking chip load?
