Showerthought: I read that a worn ball screw can cause a 0.0005 inch positional error on a VMC.

Found it in an old Haas maintenance manual I was flipping through at the shop. Has anyone else caught a weird tolerance issue that traced back to something simple like that?

Our old Bridgeport had .003 from a loose Y-axis nut.

Wait, you're saying a loose nut made that much of a difference on the backlash? I used to blame the gibs or the leadscrew for everything, but your post made me reconsider how much a simple loose nut can throw things off.

Check your gibbs for backlash first.
