Straight edges on the mill table, is scraped cast iron just better?

Been doing finish work on a 1992 VMC at the place I contract for. The table ways are still the original scraped ones. I ran the same 40 piece job on a brand new machine at a friend's spot last month. The old machine held .0005 all day, the new one was drifting past .002 by lunch. Both had the same tooling and feeds. Is it the hand scraping or did they just stop doing it right on newer stuff? Curious if anyone else has seen older machines out-cut the new ones.
