Went from eyeballing every tool offset to trusting a $9 dial indicator, and my scrap pile finally stopped growing
Six months back I was setting all my offsets by touch and sound on the Haas mill at the job in Elk Grove, and I was scrapping about 4 parts a week on average. My old lead hand Randy always said "you got good hands, kid," so I just kept doing it that way, sneaking up on the number and hoping for the best. Then in March I got a cheap 0.0005 dial indicator off a guy clearing out his box and started sweeping every tool on the gauge line before a run, takes me maybe 90 extra seconds per setup. Last month I ran 340 parts across nine jobs and threw away exactly one, and that one was my own bad print reading, not the machine. It is wild how much calmer I am at the start of a shift too, no more standing there second guessing whether the face mill is really where I left it. Randy still gives me grief about being slow on setups, but he also stopped asking me to run his rework. Anyone else make the switch from feel to an indicator, and did it take you a while to trust the numbers over your hands?
