My buddy told me to just build things instead of doing tutorials and he was right

I spent 3 months going through a bunch of JavaScript tutorials on YouTube. Could follow along fine but the second I closed the video I had nothing. My buddy Mike who's been coding for years said just pick a tiny project and struggle through it. So I built a simple to-do list app with local storage. It took me a week of googling and making dumb mistakes but I actually learned how things work together. Now I do tutorials only when I'm stuck on a specific thing. Has anyone else found that building something broken is better than watching perfect code?

Struggling through the real thing teaches you way more than watching perfect code.
