My first CSS grid site fell apart on a 13 inch laptop

I was building a portfolio page at a coffee shop in Denver and everything looked perfect on my big monitor, then I opened it on a friend's 13 inch laptop and all my columns stacked into a messy tower. Spent 4 hours figuring out that I forgot to set a min-width on the container and the grid items were just squeezing themselves into nothing. Has anyone else had a layout that only broke on smaller screens, and what's your go-to fix beyond just checking the obvious breakpoints?
