Spent 6 months indenting with spaces, my mentor saw my screen and just sighed

I taught myself Python in January and used 4 spaces religiously because a YouTube tutorial said so, never realizing tabs were even an option. Last week my mentor glanced at my editor and asked why my code looked like it was written by a typewriter from 1985. Are tabs or spaces actually the norm for beginners, or does it really not matter as long as you stay consistent?
